Top 5 Social Networks – By Popularity
At the end of 2015, Pew Research released their report on the top 5 most popular social networking sites. Based on survey data collected from March 17 to April 12 of 2015, Facebook is undoubtedly the most popular online social network, followed by Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter.
Facebook has seen a slower rate of positive growth since 2012, but it still dwarfs the other sites by capturing over 30% more adult internet users than its closest competitor, Pinterest, in 2015. Even though LinkedIn has dropped a few percentage points in adult users from 2014 to 2015, it still is more popular than Twitter, which did not budge from its following of 23% of online adults in both 2014 and 2015.
Average Time Spent on Sites
As of 2014, the global average was 20+ minutes spent on social networking sites per day. However, Facebook’s internal reports say the average U.S. adult spends over 40 minutes on Facebook per day. That’s double the global average and reportedly more time than the average person spends taking care of their pets and checking their personal email!
Based on a 2014 survey, average users in the U.S. ages 18-29 spent 51 minutes on Facebook, 29.9 minutes on Instagram, 25.6 minutes on Pinterest, 23.5 minutes on Twitter, and 9.3 minutes on LinkedIn per day. These numbers varied slightly by age group, such as LinkedIn being more popular among those ages 45-60, but Facebook overwhelmingly captured the longest daily attention of its user audience, regardless of age. This trend is likely to continue as Facebook continues to innovate and because of their large user base that attracts new users that know current users.
