5 Easy Ways to Up Your Social Media Game Today

Social media is both a gift and a curse for brands, candidates, and organizations. It allows you to reach more people with your message and your content — which is great! However, posting content consistently and being available online 24/7 is a big job, and it can be hard to keep up. Here are our top 5 quick and easy tips for a top-notch social media presence:

1) Make sure your social profiles are completed.

This goes beyond just making sure you have a profile picture and cover photo — you’ll want to make sure you’re using all features that you can to your advantage. Make sure you add relevant links to your profiles, include all the information your followers need or want to know, and for Facebook especially, check to see if you’re using the best kind of Page and template for you. For example, if you’re a political candidate, it’s best to use the Political template that’s specifically tailored to candidates with room for issues and endorsements. There are similar templates for shopping sites, venues, nonprofits, services, restaurants, and more.

2) Create a content calendar.

Consistently posting content is one of the most challenging parts of keeping up with social media, but it’s important to engage with your followers. Creating a content calendar, and planning everything ahead of time, can make content creation a lot easier.

To start, clearly define what types of content you want to post. Having categories and platforms in mind before you start to post can help you come up with exactly what you want to communicate via social. Then, set aside some time to brainstorm ideas or schedule posts ahead of time across social channels. And don’t be afraid to repurpose old content — reposting or updating some older content is a great way to fill up your content calendar quickly and easily.

3) Take advantage of scheduling functions.

In order to foster a thriving social media presence, it’s important to keep up with posting and interacting with followers online. But we know that life (and the rest of your work!) can get in the way, and you can’t always be available to post or check on your social channels. An easy way to get around this, and post regularly no matter what your calendar looks like, is to schedule posts ahead of time. So, when you have time, you can plan ahead and schedule posts for when you know you’ll be too busy.

Practically, there are a few simple ways to schedule ahead. Facebook lets you schedule posts for the future on your Page, and Twitter also has a scheduling function if you have an advertising account set up (you don’t actually need to advertise, but you do need to link a credit card to your account.) If you have other social platforms that you need to post on consistently, tools like Hootsuite can help you easily schedule content for LinkedIn, Instagram, and more.

4) Ask your audience to help you out.

If you already have an engaged audience, this is a great way to grow your followers and be seen by a broader viewership. People are more likely to trust and remember recommendations from their friends and people than they know than the brand itself. So if you have followers who are willing to help out, or some great content that’s easily shareable, don’t be afraid to ask your followers to like and share your content. Usually, people are more than happy to help out — especially if it’s for a cause they’re excited about, or there’s an incentive in place.

5) Take some time for customer service.

One of the blessings (or curses) of social media is constant availability and communication, and customers, voters, and followers have come to expect 24/7 availability and quick responsiveness from brands. Responding to users’ comments, tweets, and posts goes a long way in building a community online and making you look reliable and legitimate to your followers, but it’s also a big and time-consuming job. Setting aside some scheduled time each day or week to respond to people on your page and posts can help you be attentive and personal with your followers, but without taking over your life or distracting from other work that needs to be done.
